ET-10 & ET20 Etching Tank

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS:

Assemble the tank and accessories as shown in the picture.

ET10 assembly diagram

  1. First connect the air pump to the air inlet using the plastic tube supplied, notice the inlet on one side is sealed.

The heater is thermostatically controlled and preset to the optimum temperature for Ammonium Persulphate around 60°C.
  2. Fit heater on opposite side to the air inlet.
  3. The snap-on, snap-off support feet brackets can be mounted to the table or a board, for added stability.

OPERATION:

Instructions apply to ammonium persulphate etchant.
For other etchants, follow manufacturers recommendations

  1. Mix 200-300gm ammonium persulphate powder per litre of water to make etch solution.
  2. Fill tank with room temperature etch solution (use 1000cc = 1 litre minimum).
  3. Set heater thermostat to marked postion and turn on heater until pilot light extinguishes.
  4. Hang exposed and developed PCB in solution using the plastic clamps supplied (taking care not to damage emulsion when clamping PCB's).
  5. Turn on air agitation.
  6. Watch for the exposed copper parts to disolve (Etch time of 4-10 minutes depending on solution strength).
  7. Inspect PCB for small remnants of copper at edges of emulsion.
  8. When etching is finished, rinse PCB in running water.
  9. Removing the emulsion is not necessary, when using Kinsten presensitised PCB, however, it can be removed with alcohol or acetone. The emulsion is solderable and able to prevent oxidation of copper surface.
  10. If emulsion is removed after drying PCB's, coat with a solderable lacquer or wrap tightly in plastic to prevent oxidation of copper surfaces.

NOTES:

  • Inspecting PCB tracks for broken edges will help you adjust to correct etch time.
  • The recommended etch chemical is Ammonium Persulphate but alternative etchants can be used including Ferric Chloride

WARNING:

  • It is recommended that the agitator pump is located above the etch tank. Overfilling the tank will cause etch solution to run down air agitator tube. Disconnect the air pipe before switching off the pump to prevent damage to the pump. Damage caused by liquid entering the pump is not covered by warranty.
  • The heater must be immersed in liquid when operated. Avoid sudden temperature variations to the glass envelope as it may crack.
  • Drain and rinse the tank after use to prevent etchant crystals blocking the air holes.
